Backstory

I began my Minecraft journey in 2013, initially spending most of my time in single player mode—about 98% of it, to be precise. The remaining time was spent on popular multiplayer servers like Hypixel. However, by 2018, as I started my undergraduate studies, playing on Minecraft servers hosted by friends became a great way to meet new people and form new friendships in college.

From 2018 to 2021, my friends hosted these servers. This was a fun period of time but all of those servers were temporary and they usually faded out after a few months. So around late 2019 to early 2020, I stopped going on these servers and playing Minecraft in general.

But in the summer of 2021, I rediscovered my passion for Minecraft through a YouTuber named FitMC, who creates content about the infamous anarchy server 2B2T. Known for its never-reset world and chaotic, lawless environment, 2B2T inspired me to create a lasting Minecraft server for my friends and I.

Inspired by 2B2T, I launched GamerCraft, a server where people can build lasting memories and reconnect over time.

Like 2B2T, GamerCraft will never have its world reset, fostering a space for continuing friendship and nostalgia. However, while GamerCraft allows the use of hack clients (mainly just X-Ray, to a certain extent), it does not allow griefing in any form.

Start Of GamerCraft

I opted for the Java version of Minecraft, specifically version 1.17, which was the latest release at the time. I prioritized a vanilla setup without any server plugins or mods and hosted the server using my own PC by opening a port on my router. I marketed the server across my school’s campus. This marketing effort consisted of messaging my friends via text and Discord, and the creation of marketing posters. After pushing the server for a few weeks, we got a community of 10 - 20 players, with five being regulars.

Going Waitlist

The server originally operated on an “Open Access” basis, but after an incident on July 15, 2021, where random players spammed wooden blocks across the sky, we shifted to a waitlist system. The attackers, “txt_385_787_6969” and “VariableSix7056”, stole wood from a regular players on the server. Then used a hack client to fly and place those wooden blocks across the sky. Resulting in the following outcome:

In response, we temporarily shut down the server, relaunching it with a more controlled access system. New players could now join only through referrals from existing members or by filling out our Google Form and going though a simple review process.

Future Of GamerCraft

As of March 2024, GamerCraft has transitioned from being hosted on personal PCs to using Hostinger for improved reliability. The server is also back up and fully functional, with no plans of shutting down any time soon. Currently, the server has 2-4 active players, but we want to increase this! The goal of GamerCraft has not changed, in that the world save will never be reset and it’s a place where old friends can spend time with each other and get away, for a minute, from the struggles of being an adult.

Donating To GamerCraft

GamerCraft is entirely self-funded. I manage all administrative tasks and cover all cloud expenses. As such, GamerCraft will remain free up to a player limit of 15 simultaneous players for the foreseeable future. All donations are appreciated as they help sustain and potentially expand the server.
